2010 Opening of the castle gardens

Middachten’s beautiful and unique gardens will be opened up to the public from 15th May to 15th September 2010.  You can walk around freely from Sunday to Thursday and enjoy everything the gardens have to offer.

The Middachten gardens were laid at the start of the 18th century. The gardens of Versailles represented an inspirational source for the ground plan (the walls, moats and lanes). A formal garden was laid within this structure, with tightly sheared buxus hedges, designer trees and steep taluds.

The English landscaped gardens became fashionable at the end of the 18th century and the Middachten gardens were subsequently changed to a limited extent.  For example, this is when the groups of trees and grass lawns were created which we can still admire today.

Hugo Poortman laid another formal garden at the start of the 20th century. Certain aspects of the English landscape garden were preserved in this new design.

You will come across a number of interesting elements in the garden: an open air theatre made from yewhedges, a rose platform with old, colourful and fragrant roses and tennis and croquet fields. You will also find rare types of trees in the gardens, like the Lebanon Cedar and the Ginkgo Biloba. There is also an orangery, which is still being used for the winter storage of tub plants (for example citrus trees).
